Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that occurs when the cells of the cervix grow and multiply abnormally. The cervix is the narrow passage between the vagina and the uterus, located at the bottom of the uterus.

Cervical cancer is often caused by an infection with a virus called HPV (Human Papillomavirus). HPV infection is usually transmitted through sexual contact. However, not everyone with an HPV infection will develop cervical cancer. In most cases, the body clears the HPV infection and it does not lead to cancer. However, in some cases, the infection persists for a long time and can lead to cancer.

Symptoms of cervical cancer include vaginal bleeding (especially during intercourse), vaginal discharge, pelvic pain, and pain during intercourse. In the early stages, cervical cancer often does not cause any symptoms, so regular gynecological examinations and Pap smears are important because these tests allow for the detection of cervical cancer in its early stages.

Treatment for cervical cancer may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or a combination of these, depending on the stage of the cancer, the patient's overall health, and other factors. With early diagnosis and treatment, cervical cancer can often be successfully treated.
